In C³IAM, the energy demand is part of the production functions for each sector. For each sector’s production, different inputs including labor, capital and energy can be substituted for each other. Energy use efficiency could improve through time exogenously due to technical change or economic structural change.

The energy demand is primarily driven by economic growth, which is calibrated based on the growth rate of total factor productivity.
